SwissFoundations was initiated by 11 major Swiss grant-making foundations and founded in Zurich on May 18, 2001. The main motive for the foundation was the common will to improve the image and the development possibilities of grant-making foundations in Switzerland.
- SwissFoundations mobilizes in favor of transparency, professionalism, and the effective use of foundation means in the Swiss foundations field.
- SwissFoundations members are grant-making foundations seated in Switzerland, providing decisive support in the most varied domains, in Switzerland and abroad.
- SwissFoundations is constructing a national, leading network to promote Swiss foundations.
Currently, 61 Swiss foundations are SwissFoundations members.

At the end of October 2005, SwissFoundations published the first European Good Governance Code for grant-making institutions, thereby for the first time defining action-oriented basic rules for the good governance of classic foundation forms.
