Impact Analysis as a Source of Knowledge for Small- and Large-Scale Foundations

10h00 - 12h00

Karl der Grosse, Zürich

FPF Initiative, Cercles de travail

***The event is fully booked – registration is closed.***

Impact analysis often presents different challenges for small scale and large scale foundations. Available resources, organizational complexity, and proximity to supported partners all strongly shape how foundations approach it. But despite these differences, are there also commonalities? The Working Group on Impact and the Working Group on Small Scale Foundations took on this question and found some compelling answers.

Although very different in size, Fondation Botnar (23 employees) and the Somaha Foundation (5 employees) share a common goal: to generate transferable knowledge through their impact analysis, with the aim of applying it in other contexts as well.

At our joint meeting, we aim to:

  • Explore the specific approaches of both foundations, with inputs from Marcus Jenal (Fondation Botnar) and Eva Jaag (Somaha Foundation),
  • Identify similarities and differences in their practices,
  • Examine the central question of what role resources truly play in successful impact orientation.

Anyone interested is welcome to stay for a shared lunch at the Helferei after the meeting (at their own expense; please indicate this in your registration for planning purposes).

We look forward to an engaging exchange and fresh ideas!

***Please note that the meeting will be held in either German or English, depending on the language backgrounds of the participants. All materials will be provided in English.***

The Guest Speakers:

Eva Jaag is the Managing Director of the Somaha Foundation. She studied history with minors in political science and public law at the Universities of Bern and Paris XII. Her professional background includes work in innovation management, organizational development, research funding, and foundation management. Eva Jaag also completed an International Executive MBA at the University of St. Gallen alongside her professional activities.

Marcus Jenal is the Strategic Learning & Evaluation Lead at Fondation Botnar, where he is responsible for strategic learning and evaluation. He holds a degree in environmental sciences from ETH Zurich. Before joining Fondation Botnar, Marcus was a partner at Mesopartner. In this role, he supported organizations, programs, and projects in the design, early stages, and implementation of initiatives aimed at systemic change. He has continuously expanded his expertise in complex systems theory and related scientific fields through targeted further education and research projects. He has also been deeply involved in the conceptual development of systemic approaches to improve project design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. At Fondation Botnar, he coordinates efforts to systematically capture and enhance the foundation’s effectiveness in its areas of engagement.
