New GCP Publication Examines Philanthropic Engagement in the Media Sector
In March 2025, the Geneva Centre for Philanthropy (GCP), led by Gilles Marchand, launched the Media & Philanthropy Initiative (IMP) (as reported by SwissFoundations). Within this framework, the GCP has now published a new report exploring philanthropic engagement in the media sector, with a particular focus on the role of the media in supporting democracy.
The publication « Towards a charter of philanthropic engagement in the media sector » highlights the current crisis in the media, characterized by economic precariousness, digitalization, social media, and the increasing spread of unverified information. Against this backdrop, the publication demonstrates how philanthropic engagement, as an additional source of funding, can safeguard media independence and strengthen its contribution to democracy. The publication introduces the “Charter of Philanthropic Engagement in the Media”, which defines professional frameworks for transparent and public-interest-oriented support.
The publication is available in English, German and French. Further information about the initiative can be found here.
