#PhilanthropyForClimate: Implementation Guide now available

We all know and feel the climate emergency that we are facing, and this particularly warm autumn is showing it once more. Foundations and philanthropic organisations, which hold assets for the common good, can use their resources, independence, and influence to rise to the challenge. And the good news is that many have started to do so.

Last year WINGS and Philea launched an International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change, which is a call to all foundations, regardless of their mission, status, and geographic location to act on the climate emergency. Signatories pledge to take action under the seven pillars of the Commitment.

Now the two philanthropic infrastructure organisations published an Implementation Guide with practical actions that any foundation can take to start its climate journey. The Guide is designed to inspire and support foundation signatories as they embark on their journey of change. It is divided into seven sections, one for each pillar, and suggests actions at three levels: Getting Started, Building Momentum, and Demonstrating Leadership. Some examples:

  • Hosting workshops with climate experts for their Board of Directors and staff about climate change
  • Investigating how climate change affects their mission and trying to integrate climate into their programmatic strategies
  • Moving their investments away from fossil fuels
  • Partnering with other organisations to co-fund projects in the intersections between climate and health, education, and democracy, to name a few fields
  • Supporting campaigns and projects led by the communities most affected by the climate emergency

Laudes Foundation, a member of SwissFoundations, and more than 580 other organisations have already signed the philanthropic climate commitment and are part of the growing #PhilanthropyForClimate movement! If you are interested in joining the International Commitment, you can sign it here.
