“Coronavirus is a crisis that the philanthropic world should and must draw lessons from“

How has COVID-19 changed the philanthropic sector and the collaboration between the north and the south? While the crisis has deeply affected philanthropy, it has also highlighted the urgent necessity to invest capital in solving some of the most world’s challenging problems. The report from the Centre for Strategic Philanthropy (CSP) at University of Cambridge Judge Business School PHILANTHROPY AND COVID-19: IS THE NORTH– SOUTH POWER BALANCE FINALLY SHIFTING? – investigates the impact of the pandemic on the philanthropic structures and the relationship between organizations and foundations from the Global North and the Global South.

The shift in power dynamic revealed by the study is fragile. Local institutions, infrastructures and capabilities needs to be empowered and encouraged rather than replicating the northern model of philanthropy. This report shows an enriching view of the current relationship between northern and southern philanthropy, NGOs, governments and institutions. Their analysis allow them to draw the precise field of actions that philanthropy needs in order to achieve its development goals. Hence, to anchor deep change in the long term and reach the Sustainable Development Goals, three major steps has to be addressed:

  1. Fund Networks to build infrastructure, capacity and knowledge
  2. Increase partnerships between Global South governments and Global South philanthropists
  3. Build resilience by funding core costs
