Swiss Foundation Code

SwissFoundations, the Association for grant-making foundations in Switzerland, is the first organization in Europe to publish generally applicable governance guidelines on modern and professional foundation management.

The SwissFoundations Code is based on three central principles that are explained in greater detail by means of 22 descriptions and recommendations regarding foundation, management, furtherance, and finances. Consequently, for the first time in Europe, classic foundations can refer to a concise Best Practice Code. Despite having a general European tone, the code has a specific Swiss background and is based on a liberal understanding of foundation governance, namely:
  • Self-regulation: "only" recommendations in lieu of "comply or explain"
  • Clear and brief: 3 normative principles and 22 strategic recommendations
  • No rigid statements: recommendations can be adhered to by small, medium-sized and large foundations, without involving any major administrative work

The Code will be available in the form of a second volume to the series "Foundation Governance" and will be published in German, French, and English by Helbing & Lichtenhahn (Basel, Geneva, Munich) at the end of October. As such, the Code will represent a European novelty. According to plans, this publication will be followed by a commentary on the Code corroborating the recommendations - the majority of which are based on strategic aspects - as well as including founded and practice-oriented explanations.
